Americans have chosen a general of African descent to make an unprecedented remark about the president of Burkina Faso—a man people all over the continent now refer to as the "President of Africa." They are using a Black man from the West as a weapon against a Black leader driving Africa's comeback. Africans today are smarter; we see past their former games. We are aware of what our president, Ibrahim Traoré, is doing for all of Africa and for Burkina Faso.
President Traoré has made notable progress for his people since assuming power. He has opened work opportunities for young Burkinabés, made education free and available all the way to the university level, empowered local farmers, and started large-scale road and housing construction projects for his people, overtaking many African leaders who have been in power for ages. Burkina Faso has become a symbol of African dignity and self-reliance.
Why, therefore, are they going against a leader who represents his people? Why is America now so worried about Burkina Faso but quiet on nations like Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, and Congo, where millions of educated young people are still jobless and basic infrastructure falls apart?
The actual cause is obvious: President Traoré has courageously recovered his country's riches. He revoked foreign gold mining licenses originally held by Western companies and created fresh alliances with nations including Russia, preserving Burkina Faso's riches in African hands. Their pursuit of him stems from this resistance to Western economic hegemony.
President Ibrahim Traoré is a new age for Africa in which our leaders give their people priority over outside expectations. No amount of propaganda or manipulation will halt this movement. Africa is aware and vigilant.
